O Castro site

Vigo was born in the northern side of Monte do Castro between 2nd century b. C and 3rd century a. C. Here you can see three old buildings from this prehistoric site that reached 1800 sqm. The different information panels will guide you through the history of this place that finally became a Roman fortress.

Roman villa of Toralla

Roman villa of Toralla is located in Oia neighborhood, close to the beaches of O Vao and Samil. It dates from the 4th and 5th century’s and it is also known as Finca Mirambell (it is the name of the family who owns the rural property where the villa is placed. They were who discovered the first remains).

It is the only Roman villa in Galicia that has been fully excavated and can be visited with or without guide. Both options will allow you to discover the villa, its rooms, the salt lake and its thermal system.

Salinae

In Calle Rosalía de Castro you can visit a solar salt evaporation pond. It was discovered during the excavations realized to build a health centre. Nowadays, it is one of the most interesting points to visit due to its conservation.

Your visit will introduce you to the saltworks, how to get salt and the uses Romans gave to it.

Quiñones de León Museum

It is located in the low floor of a country house with the same name in Parque de Castrelos. It preserves the majestic environment of the residence with the furniture and the works of art. In the East side the prehistoric and archaeology sections are placed. In the first and second floors, along with the towers, you can find a big collection of Galician art of 20th century.

In the back side you can admire the gardens with English and French styles.

Casa das Artes (House of Arts)

Pacheco Photographic Archive In the number 15 of Calle Policarpo Sanz you can find a great collection of pictures of Vigo. It has 140.000 images between the end of 19th century and the 70’s decade.
Pacheco family photographed the history of the city and its citizens along their life: fishers from Berbés, ox carriages in Calle Principe, the first trams, first cars and the begging of the industry in Vigo.

Laxeiro Foundation

Casa das Artes also holds the Laxeiro Foundation with a permanent exhibition dedicated to José Otero Abeledo, one of the most representative icons of the renewal movement in Galician painting.
Laxeiro Foundation has sixty five from the seventy seven paints José Otero Abeledo donated to Vigo. The other ones are in the Quiñones de León Museum. In addition, the foundation has temporary exhibitions from contemporary artists.

If you wish to go on a guided visit you should book with 2 days in advance.

Casa Galega da Cultura (Galician House of Culture)

Casa Galega da Cultura is located in Plaza de la Princesa. Until the 70’s decade it used to be the headquarters of the City Hall of Vigo. Nowadays, it is a multidisciplinary centre with literary and artistic activities. It also has the Penzol library and the Francisco Fernandez del Riego museum, dedicated to this important figure of the history of Vigo.

Barrié Foundation

Barrié Foundation is located in Policarpo Sanz, 31. It was opened in 2005 in a building from the architect Manuel Gómez Román. Since then, it has been holding art exhibitions, concerts, seminars and workshops, among others.

Galician Museum of the Sea

Along the rooms of the museum of the sea, you can dive into the Galician fishing activity: fishing, shellfishing, aquaculture, preservation methods and its evolution throughout the time.

This museum has an aquarium with a representation of the ecosystem in the area between the dock where the museum is located and the Cíes Islands.

Liste Museum

This ethnographic museum is hold in a family house in Calle Pastora. It has a permanent exhibition of Olimpio Liste Regueiro and its legacy. Through its four floors there is more than 2000 pieces from handmade Galician trades: rye growing culture, traditional wheel, healing art, etc.

MARCO Museum

Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO) is located in Calle Principe and it used to be the jail of Vigo. Nowadays, it holds temporary exhibitions of contemporary art in different areas: architecture, plastic arts, video, web art, design, films…

Verbum Museum

Verbum Museum is also known as House of Words, is an interactive museum dedicated to human communication (languages, words, signs…).

The building was designed by César Portela; inside has 29 cubes with 81 units with different themes: language, science, literature and technology.

Naturnova

Naturnova is an Inteactive Centre of Environmental Education located in Calle Velazquez Moreno. Here there is a representation of our environment from the beginning of the universe until the human being.

Through interactive modules there is an increase of knowledge about nature and the way to respect it.
